Safety

The NHS and The Lullaby Trust, a safe sleep charity, recommend that newborns be kept in a bassinet or cot in same room as their parents. They should not be in your bed. When you are choosing a crib for your bed ensure that it meets the latest safety standards (it must be BS EN 1130:2019) and does not have any gaps or parts that could cause your child to become trapped. Also, look for a mattress that's solid and flat. A soft or sagging mattress could increase your baby's risk of SIDS, so go for a brand new mattress instead of second-hand.
Finally, you should look for bedding that is fitted and free of any loose blankets or pillows. Duvets and pillows can choke your baby, and pillows can get stuck to their faces. It's best to use a fitted sheet instead however, make sure it's fitted correctly.

Comfort
A close and secure baby throughout the night will give you peace of mind, but you should be capable of reaching them quickly for middle-of-the-night feeding. You can easily do this without having get up from bed with a crib at your bedside. They also make it easier to soothe babies back to sleep. If you want to be able to sleep with your child but don't want to hassle with having to get up every time they need to be fed, a moses-basket can be a good alternative.
Most cribs that are bedside can be attached to the side of your bed that allows you to see and reach your baby easily. They typically come with a mesh window, to allow you to check on your baby without having to disturb them. You may also find a reflux setting that helps with colic and reflux.
